Neustadt bei Coburg is known as the Bavarian Doll Town. Dolls, Teddy bears, glass Christmas ornaments, and toys of all sorts are produced today in and around this town of modern factories. The Museum der Deutschen Spielzeugindustrie provides a rare opportunity to visualize how German dolls and toys were manufactured. Cases and floor exhibits feature the complete manufacturing processes of wood, wax, papier-mâché, composition, bisque and celluloid. One wing is devoted entirely to an exhibit of 216 authentically costumed dolls of the peoples of the German-speaking countries. The basement floor features wonderful dioramas of Max and Moritz - the inspiration for the Katzenjammer Kids - and Santa's magnificent workshop. In conjunction with the Puppenfest, there is a special themed exhibit of one-of-a-kind artist dolls entitled "Number Game" on the ground floor. Glas-Weihnachtsland features wonderful, original Inge-Glas Christmas ornaments, wooden folk-art from the Erzgebirge, plush toys, replicas of antique dolls and toys, and rare collector’s toys. The 9th Annual Neustadter Puppenfest is sponsored by the doll and toy museums, doll artists, toy manufacturers, and suppliers in the area. A trade show, special exhibits and an international antiques show are the main attractions, but for a special treat, don’t fail to visit the Puppendoktor, Peter Packert, where you will find a treasure trove of old store stock from doll heads to ribbons and trims. Our final stop is the Schaller papier mâché factory. Schaller makes holiday figures and candy containers in the manner of the last century. You can choose from Easter bunnies, Santas, Thanksgiving turkeys, and more in the factory outlet store. |
